What is Trauma-informed Coaching?

This speaks to a coaching framework that requires a thorough understanding of the profound neurological, biological, psychological, and social effects trauma can have on an individual. I am experienced at recognizing my client’s constant interdependent needs for safety, connections, and ways to manage emotions/impulses. During our sessions, I provide constant attention, caring awareness, and sensitivity to my client’s words, body language, and other nonverbal cues. My client’s needs are at the forefront of our experience together.

There are few absolutes in this world, but trauma is one aspect of human society that is, unfortunately, present in almost every age, race, ability, and socioeconomic group. Although trauma has no boundaries, it does have a disproportionate impact on marginalized populations such as LGBTQI+ folks, people of color, and people with low incomes. Gaining access to trauma-informed resources and care is more difficult for these populations.

Trauma Basics

Trauma is what happens when the extreme stress of an event or circumstance overwhelms a person’s ability to cope. Those circumstances vary, but they are all threats to physical or emotional health: violence, hate crimes, sexual abuse, or anything else that causes extreme stress.

Why Is a Trauma-Informed Approach Important?

On a fundamental level, a trauma-informed approach is important because it shifts the focus from deficits and brokenness to a holistic healing way of understanding the context of a person’s stressors and behaviors.
Clients and providers both benefit from a trauma-informed approach because many people who have experienced trauma have challenges in maintaining healthy relationships, including with care providers. The positive, trusting relationships that are nurtured with a trauma-informed approach are not only better for clients, but they also help facilitators avoid burnout.

Client  Review

“Jessica’s assistance did not end when my son stopped being a baby. With Jessica’s education in early childhood development, I have consulted her with our son’s education and learning abilities. All kids learn differently. I so appreciated her help coaching us on different ways to assist in the learning process, while still honoring everyone’s process and autonomy. I am very grateful for Jessica—I can’t thank her enough for the peace of mind she has given me.” -C.D.
